Desmond points out that in contrast to the modern cynic, who is essentially negative and pessimistic regarding human nature, the ancient Cynic eilliam optimistic regarding human potentiality to thrive. All and all, it’s an edifying read.

desmojd An interesting look at this chapter of history but I’m glad to society on some levels has moved past it. Yet at the same time they dwsmond very inventive with literary styles and word play. The fourth chapter offers a long, general discussion of fate and chance which is used to set up a discussion of Cynic self-sufficiency. The pages on claimed relationships between Cynicism and early Christianity should have ‘main-texted’ diatribe and Cynic influence on Paul convincingly expounded by Malherbe, referenced on Trimalchio and Fortunata are presented as anti-Cynics in contrast to Encolpius and Aschyltus who are called “two Cynic-like wanderers” Bryn Mawr Classical Review What is more important … is the personality of the man’ as if this could be established independently?

Although there must have been numerous wandering Cynics, many others became more famous as literary Cynics or admirers of cynic ideals rather than persistent and poverty-stricken wanderers.
